Eliminate "random acts of organizing"

Often times when we are organizing, we tend to divert our attention to the messiest center of the room. I recieved an e-mail from one of my clients explaining the experience she had with straightening up her storage room: "After two hours of working continuously, I stopped and looked around to see how this would look to someone who  was seeing it for the first time. It looked just as bad as when I started!" What I had done was what I'll term, "random acts of organizing."

Instead of starting at one side of the room and working around to the other, she began to just fix things as she saw them. This method does not allow for a "WOW!" factor to be seen, and that "WOW!" is what motivates us to keep going.

If mid-organizing, you look around and think, "Look at all I have left to do," remember the CFO system that apply to desk rescue:

  • Clear-You know where to start, always in a corner
  • Fast- Stand, the work will go much quicker.
  • Organized-Group like itmes together.

As you follow this system, you can maintain that forward progress by WOWing yourself along the way.
