Closet Clean-up: Mary attacking closets for Spring 2012

When the seasons change from Winter to Spring, and the weather warms, this signals two things to an organizer: Spring cleaning is among us, and with that a need to re-organize wardrobes as it becomes time to swap heavy sweaters and wool coats in favor of lighter clothing.

ADD and the Workplace

Individuals that have ADD can often find that their mindset is advantageous in some aspects, and detrimental in others. However, having this disorder does not limit a person from becoming immensely successful. On the contrary, many of the most successful persons throughout history had ADD, from Einstein to John F. Kennedy to Bill Gates.

The Real Life of a Professional Organizer

The business life of a professional organizer is that they help organize homes and offices, as well as time management and productivity issues.

Many professional organizers are born with an organizing sense, but take that ability and continue education for certification in the field. Some, like myself, focus on also becoming certified in ADD/ADHD management and what effects a person with it.

Time Management: Reduce Distractions

Time management is a big goal for a lot of my clients. Often, there doesn't seem to be enough time to finish up what needs to be done. The key to time management is to work in blocks on one item on your to-do list only.

One of the biggest threats to time management is distractions. What you have to realize is that what you can do in 10 minutes will take 40 with distractions.

Chronic Disorganization

A lot of the time, those with Chronic Disorganization are labeled as "packrats" or "clutterbugs." The average person with Chronic Disorganizaiton has around 3000 documents, 40% more housework on their to-do list, and 15-20% of their income goes toward late fees. They are often creative individuals, who cannot seem to stay on top of their chores.

What to pull out of your files for the new year

Sometimes, even organizers break their own rules. I had actually gotten behind on filing at home. Last weekend, I bit the bullet and did all of my neglected home filing for the past 3 months. And the reason this is a "no-no" is because doing it all at once is a terrible job; even listening to Car Talk on the radio wouldn't take the pain away.

Eliminate "random acts of organizing"

Often times when we are organizing, we tend to divert our attention to the messiest center of the room. I recieved an e-mail from one of my clients explaining the experience she had with straightening up her storage room: "After two hours of working continuously, I stopped and looked around to see how this would look to someone who  was seeing it for the first time. It looked just as bad as when I started!" What I had done was what I'll term, "random acts of organizing."

Conquering Mind Clutter

 Conquering Mind Clutter

We often think of organization in the context of things and possessions, but often it is our mind that prevents us from achieving our potential.

Tips for Conquering Mind Clutter

1.     Do a mind dump of all the things you feel you “have to do”

2.     Next ask how important each is on scale of 1 -10

3.     Give yourself permission to eliminate (scratch off your list) or delegate ½ of them

What remains, the “must-do’s” are what is written on your calendar.&

Life Layers

Would getting organized be life changing? I spoke at the May Women in Business luncheon for the Morristown Area Chamber of Commerce last spring, and many women vocalized a concern for the lack of time for their personal interests, or trouble finding the balance between work and home.  If this sounds like you, make a list of “life layers” or major events that need to be factored as a priority.
