Good Enough

I love the Good Housekeeping articles that talk about good enough. Life is moving so fast, I think this is a good philosophy to adopt. Let go of perfection and the Martha Stewart image and be happy with “Good Enough”.  Yes, taxes and brain surgery need to be done just right/perfect but for most other things in life good enough will keep us moving forward. Perfectionism stops most of us in our tracks and we stay paralyzed. For me, that means doing nothing on a project or leaving it uncompleted.

Are You Visually Blind?

The other day I had something happen that reminded me how we can be "visually blind' to our surroundings. My daughter asked me where the mini blender was, so I looked where I thought it was and didn’t see it, and then looked in several other cabinets I don’t use a lot. When I found it, it was in a cabinet I am in all the time and it was sitting right out front.

This same situation can happen with clutter. We get so used to seeing it we don’t see it.
I remember years ago when my children were growing up, one day I looked at a flower arrangement on a table – really looked at it.

Make “Snowflake Changes”

Well, does one teeny, tiny organizing project make a difference? Does one snowflake make a difference? No, but a bunch of snowflakes can change our lives. As our whole world/plans in East TN have been changed by an accumulation of snowflakes, you can change your world by making teeny tiny changes in your environment. This is true for your home and office.

Maybe it is just clearing off your night table. Not all the drawers, etc; just the top or even part of the top or maybe just do one drawer in your kitchen.

Learning a lesson from fall and the leaves

Ever wished that a strong autumn wind would blow all your clutter away? Let's take a few minutes and see what we can learn from falling leaves. It will help you change your thinking.

Trees shed leaves. Is it time for you to shed your clutter? Winter is a time for trees to rest. Would you rest better with reduced items in your space?

When the leaves are shed the lovely graceful shapes of the branches stand out. Would your favorite items stand out if the clutter surrounding them was reduced? Leaves become mulch that helps protect plant roots.

Does Your Brain Have an Oil Leak from Mind Clutter?

Recently I heard Lorin Beller Blake, of Big Fish Nation http://www.bigfishnation.com say that unfinished bold actions are like the oil leak in the Gulf:  energy sucking and energy wasting.  On the other hand, completing a big, bold action is a huge energy boost.  What makes us mentally imitate that notorious oil leak?

A bold action is something we need to do or should do, but because of procrastination or fear we hesitate to take the next step.  To learn more about bold action

Reality Organizing

I just saw a picture of a gardening organizer in Martha Stewart’s magazine and it reminded me of a built-in closet organizer. Now don’t get me wrong – it’s great to put in systems for closets and gardening tools, but let’s get real.

The gardening tools in the magazine were brand new; mine look like they have been left out in the mud for a few weeks.  The picture showed one rake and just a couple of other tools. It looked lovely but….it showed just a fraction of the tools we gardeners own. As for the organized closet pictures, let’s get real there too.

Quick Kitchen Project

Taking my own advice....

Yesterday when I tried to close the drawer which holds my plastic lids for storage containers, I realized I had to do something. Lids were trying their best to jump out, crawl out, or fall out the bottom; there were just too many pieces in the drawer.

Time to have a Lid Party!  So this morning I took all the lids out and put like ones together.  Taking all of them out at once would make me finish the project. Next, I emptied the drawer that was filled with all the bottoms and put like sizes together.

Conquer Your Junk Drawer - Quick, inexpensive organizing project to jump-start organized!

Here is an easy and fun project that is quick, inexpensive. People tell me this is so fun and that it motivates them to do other projects.

1. Dump the contents of your junk drawer onto a cleared space covered with
newspaper.
2. Assemble all the different size zippy bags you have - snack, sandwich, quart, etc.
3. Pick out all the items from the drawer that need to be returned to other areas of the house.  Then return them.
4. Sort items you want to stay in the junk drawer and put them in the appropriate size clear zippy bag.
5.
